Handler was the youngest of six children born to Rita (née Stoecker), a homemaker, and Seymour Handler, a used-car dealer, in Livingston, New Jersey. Her American father was Ashkenazi Jewish, and her Mormon mother was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1958. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and fought it for over 15 years before succumbing to the disease in 2006.
