Early life and Education

On June 25, 1932, Julian Hart Robertson Jr. was born. He was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, United States. A textile businessman, Julian Hart Robertson Sr., and Blanche Spencer are the parents of Robertson. In 1951, he graduated from Episcopal High School, and in 1955, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He joined the Zeta Psi fraternity at Chapel Hill. In the U.S. Navy, he served as an officer from 1953 until 1957.

Robertson relocated to New York City after leaving the Navy and worked as a stockbroker for Kidder, Peabody & Co. for a while. Kidder’s asset management division was his final position before he and his family moved to New Zealand for a year to write a novel. The next year, Robertson founded Tiger Management with the help of friends and family members.

Professional Life

It was on April 1, 1996, that BusinessWeek published Gary Weiss’ “Fall of the Wizard” cover article, which criticized Robertson’s performance and conduct as Tiger Management’s CEO. As a result, Robertson sued Weiss and BusinessWeek for slander and was awarded $1 billion. Nothing changed hands and BusinessWeek stood by its story.

The assets of the Tiger funds peaked in 1998 at $22 billion. Aware of the overvaluation of technology stocks in relation to their earnings and earning potential, Robertson’s Tiger Fund properly forecast the Tech Bubble. This means that despite its short-term performance being below average, Tiger was able to identify and forecast market flaws. A well-known value manager like Tiger Management invests a small part of its portfolio in technology equities. In 1999, Tiger cut almost all ties with this sector.

It was at that time that U.S. Airways, which was having financial difficulties, was Tiger’s largest stock position. Ultimately, he had to close the doors of his investment firm in March 2000 and refund all outside cash to investors because of these errors. Prior to 1998, Tiger had made $2 billion in gains but lost most of it during a massive one-day move in the yen. In September 2001, Robertson handed to former Tiger investors 24.8 million shares of U.S. Airways at a steep discount. “I intend to keep onto my own shares in the airline,” Robertson said at the time.

Even after shutting down his hedge fund in 2000, Robertson continued to promote and finance aspiring hedge fund managers in exchange for a share in their fund management firms. There are also a number of “Tiger Cubs” that Robertson employed and mentored while at Tiger Management, notably Chris Shumway and Lee Ainslie.
