Early life and Education
William W. Knight and his wife Lota gave him Philip Hampson Knight when he was born on February 24, 1938. Despite his domineering nature, his father was a loving father who encouraged him to push his limits.
During his time in Portland, he attended Cleveland High School. Growing up, he enjoyed running and playing on the school’s team. At the University of Oregon (U.O.), Eugene pursued his passion for athletics and continued to run. They introduced him to world-renowned track coach Bill Bower man, who trained him to run middle-distance races. Knight and Bower’s man developed a close relationship over time.

Then he went back to work for an accounting firm in Portland, Oregon, and worked on his business plan in parallel. His former coach, Bower man, formed a partnership in 1964 to distribute the shoes in the United States, resulting in Blue Ribbon Sports.
In 1971, Knight and Bower’s man decided to start their own company because of disagreements with Onitsuka over a contract. Jeff Johnson, a friend of Knight’s and a Blue Ribbon Sports employee, suggested naming Nike after the Greek winged goddess of victory.
