Early Life & Education
Vinton Gray Cerf was born in New Haven, Connecticut on June 23, 1943. He is the son of Muriel and Vinton Thurston Cerf. Cerf completed his school life education at Van Nuys High School and later admitted into Stanford University. Cerf’s major subject in varsity was mathematics.
Cerf used to work with software and computer from a young age. While he was in school Cerf worked with Rocketdyne on the Apollo program.
Career
After completing his college life Vint Cerf joined IBM as a systems engineer supporting QUIKTRAN. He worked there for about 2 years. Cerf took his Ph.D. degree from UCLA in 1972 while he was at UCLA, he met his partner an American electrical engineer, Bob Kahn.
When Cerf met with Kahn, Kahn was working on the ARPANET. Cerf got involved with that project and the rest is history. The project was about connecting many computers with another in a single network so that they can share information easily.
In an interview, Cerf said, “The idea was to link all their computers together so they could share their resources, computing capabilities, and results to make progress more quickly.” The project idea was not that vast at first but it has changed the world’s communication, economy, and everything.
Vint Cerf became part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in 1973 and worked there for 6 years. They were working on developing the military function of the US. End of the research they developed packet security technology, packet satellite, packet radio, TCP/IP.
After finishing the DARPA project Cerf started work as the vice president of MCI Digital Information Services in 1982. He served for the MCI for four years.
In 1994, Vint Cerf and Kahn made an organization called “Internet Society”. Here the two engineers helped common people to understand the internet. They taught them the benefits of the internet and show them how to use the internet.
