Andrew Klaber was born in 1971 in New York City. His father, Peter, was a successful businessman, and his mother, Barbara, was a social worker. Klaber has two older sisters. He grew up in a comfortable upper–middle–class home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and attended private schools. As a teenager, Klaber became interested in international affairs and politics.
He traveled to Europe and the Soviet Union with his father on business trips, and he developed a keen interest in the history and cultures of these regions. He also became interested in the issue of global poverty and inequality, and he began to volunteer his time with various organizations that sought to address these problems.
