Company History

In Season 4, Episode 2 of The Office, the actors revealed the original history of Dunder Mifflin. The name Dunder Mifflin is actually the pair of last names of the two founders, Robert Dunder and Robert Mifflin.

At first, Robert Dunder was the sole founder of this company, and he supplied metal brackets for construction. After meeting Robert Mifflin at Dartmouth College, the construction material company turned into a paper sales company.

Though there is no clear information about when this happened, people assume that they founded Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc. in 1949. They opened several branches across the Northeastern regions of the US, keeping the headquarters in New York City.

At that time, Robert Mifflin struggled hard to compete with major companies like Staples and Office Depot. However, this competition was hard for a small and local enterprise. Moreover, the digital revolution almost made the company shut off, including branch closures and downsizing.

Ryan Howard, a former VP of northeast sales, was mainly responsible for this downfall. He launched a new website to boost sales. Unfortunately, he spammed the sales transactions and later was arrested for his fraudulence.

In 2009, Sabre (a printer company) bought Dunder Mifflin and expanded it by including printers in their catalog. Dunder Mifflin regained its authority in 2012 when Sabre was dissolved from the proprietorship.

Through The Office, the popularity of the paper company has spread so much that NBC (National Broadcasting Company) decided to sell tees, mugs, calendars, and other items on its website with the Dunder Mifflin logo. In November 2011, Staples, Inc. decided to sell their own manufactured paper under the “Dunder Mifflin” name.

The fictional paper sales company now has an official website and sells different kinds of products with the name and cartoons of the characters of the show.
