Early life and Education

Johnson was born in Lansing, Michigan in the United States of America. His father Earvin Sr. used to work in the General moto assembly and his mother, Christine worked as a school janitor. His childhood was very tough as he had to work with his parents regularly and because of working on the garbage route other children called him “Garbage Man”.

From his childhood, Johnson was very fond of basketball. He wanted to become a player like Bill Russel, Earl Monroe, Marques Haynes. He got many advantages as his family was from athletic background especially his parents were basketball players. He learned to play basketball from his father who was a member of the high school basketball team in Mississippi.

He decided to build his career in basketball when he was reading in eighth grade. He was a dominant junior high player at that time. His dream to study in Sexton High School couldn’t be true because of busing. So he was got admission to Everett High School. However, his siblings faced racism here too. When he was 15 he dubbed the name Magic because of his magical performance in basketball. He led the Everett high school team to a glorious victory in the stated championship. When he was graduated was considered the best basketball player of his time.

Then he went to Michigan State College and played in the college basketball team. In the NCAA Tournament, Michigan State won the match against Indiana State and Johnson became the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. For his wonderful performance in the season, he became selected to the 1978-79 All-American team. Eventually, he began to play more vigorously. For his glorious performance, he entered the NBA draft.

Professional Life

His professional game started with Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. He was very happy to play alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who was a giant man having a height of 7 ft 2 inches. Scoring an average of 18 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game he ended the season. For his performance, Johnson was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Team.

In 1980 Lakers managed to reach the NBA finals with a record of 60-22. In-Game number 5 against the Philadelphia 76ers, teams leading player Karim Abdul-Jabbar faced a severe injury. As a result, Johnson got a chance to play at the center in Game 6. For his excellent performance in this game, the Lakers won the NBA finals and he became the only rookie to win the NBA Finals MVP award. Later Johnson became one of the four players to win the NCAA and NBA championships back-to-back.

It is a matter of great regret that Johnson couldn’t play 45 games in the 1980-81 season as a result of his injury. At the end of the season, Johnson signed a $25 million contract for 25 years with the Lakers. It was the highest-paying contract at that time. This season he managed to reach the milestone of 700 points, 700 rebounds, and 700 assists. Moreover, his team Lakers won the 1982 NBA finals and he won his second NBA Finals MVP award.

Though the Lakers reached the 1982-83 season NBA Finals for the third time, they were defeated by the Sixers. It is a great regret that Johnson couldn’t make a hat-trick because of missing the MVP of this season.

It is an interesting fact that in 1983-85 seasons the Lakers, reached the NBA Finals for four consecutive years. But it is a matter of sorrow that they became the runner-up for back-to-back two years. But they made a comeback in their fifth NBA finals defeating the Celtics.

The 1986-87 season is one of the memorable ones for Johnson because this time he achieved his first regular-season MVP award. Eventually, the Lakers managed to reach the NBA finals for the sixth time and they played against the Celtics for the third time in the NBA Finals. This time Lakers won the game and sustained their victory for back-to-back two years. Because of his excellent performance, Johnson received the NBA MVP award and it is was his hat trick.

Again in the following NBA season, Johnson earned his second NBA season MVP award for his extraordinary performance throughout the season. In 1991, Johnson received the devastating news of being HIV positive. He later confirmed that it was a result of being intimate with several women. However, he got a chance to play in the Olympics and glorified himself winning a gold medal.

He was retired from basketball before being selected for the Olympics but after returning from the Olympics he changed his mind and again started playing. But because of the concern of other players, Johnson finally retired from basketball. He played a total of 905 NBA games tallied a total of 17,707 points, 6,559 rebounds, 10,141 assists. His career average was 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 11.2 assists per game.

Soon at the end of the 1993-94 NBA season, he started his coaching career by joining as the coach of the Lakers. But he couldn’t do well this time. Consequently, he retired from coaching and formed a barnstorming team named Magic Johnson All-Stars.
